Andrew Salomone over on Instructables.com describes how to create a secret compartment in a standard No.2 pencil. He uses several in-progress photos and details the construction fluently. You need a drill press in order to hollow the pencil, but the rest of the process looks pretty straightforward.

Makezine recently featured this video on how to build a multi-book secret storage box. Starting with a group or series of books you can conceal a much larger compartment. You can also use a jig or a scroll saw to avoid the tedious process of cutting individual pages one-by-one.
I found these faux books while browsing the local Ross retail store. When inspecting up close, they don’t look very authentic as books. But the price was reasonable, and they may fit right in on a shelf with a lot of other books.
